Well, it's fairly straightforward! The area of the whole rectangle is (a+2)*a, while the area of the unshaded rectangle is (a-3)*6. So the area of the shaded region is (a+2)*a - (a-3)*6 = [tex] a^{2} - 4a + 18 [/tex]
