if it is : (x + 5) / 8 = 6
multiply both sides by 8, eliminating the 8 on the left side
x + 5 = 8 * 6
x + 5 = 48
x = 48 - 5
x = 43
if it is : x + (5/8) = 6
subtract 5/8 from both sides
x = 6 - 5/8
x = 48/8 - 5/8
x = 43/8 or 5 3/8
